OMG! Adorbz of the Day: “Husband and husband? So that means you love each other.”

Indeed, Calen. Indeed. Now let’s go play some ping pong.

I’m actually writing a paper for one of my classes about the gender attribution process of babies and how they don’t assign genders until they are over a year old. My question, I wonder, is if they don’t assign the most basic of human concepts - what is a “man” and what is a “woman” - how can we use that knowledge to stop discrimination when a child physically sees two of the “same” gender holding hands? Together? Being affectionate?

I don’t know if I can even connect the concepts; I’m researching now, but we’ll see.

tl;dr THIS VIDEO IS ADORABLE.

Unfortunately, socialization begins at birth with what colors/toys/emotional behaviors we associate as being masculine and feminine, and gender roles are pretty well established around age 2. As for what’s seen as normal for them in terms of affection between the genders, I think that if they were in a society where there wasn’t such a majority of heterosexual couples being modeled as “normal,” we’d really be onto something. Because in parts of Africa it’s totally cool for little boys to hold their other little boy friend’s hands. Fuck our way of socialization.

Oh, if only we could create such a utopia though.
